(May 26)[Notes:various of people crying in shelter - APTN Stringer] Friends and neighbors are trying to absorb the shock of what happened over the weekend in a couple of towns in the Midwest when tornados hit - destroying neighborhoods and claiming at least 8 lives. [Notes:various of storm damage - KMSP]In Hugo, Minnesota -- storms sirens went off - and many dashed for cover in basements. But on the way to her basement, Rachel Baldwin stopped to get her puppy ... [Notes:APTN Stringer] SOT: Rachel Baldwin, Wall Fell on Her: "I was down at the very end of the stairs and a wall and a water heater collapsed on top of me. So I tore away at the sheet rock and climbed out of the bottom of the house. And then I told people that my boyfriend and step-dad were still trapped down there.Rachel's arm was scratched up, and she got a bump on the head, but is otherwise OK. Her step-dad and boyfriend also made it out of the rubble safely. [Notes:various of damage - KMSP]But her home, and many others are gone. The Red Cross moved in to set up shelters. [Notes:stringer material] SOT: Courtney Johnson, Red Cross: "I think that right now the people are just kind of in that bewilderment phase from this disaster. There's a lot of mourning going on, people are just kind of all soaking it in - realizing what happened to them."The mayor says a two-year-old is dead and the damage is extensive.SOT: Mayor Fran Miron, Hugo, Minnesota: "as I understand we've had at least 150 homes damaged, uh, there's 50 homes that have been completely destroyed." [Notes:various of damage - KMSP]He says he lost buildings on his farm, along with many of the other people in the town. [Notes:various of damage - KCRG] And in Parkersburg, Iowa, the scene is much the same. Flattened homes, spread across a neighborhood in splinters. Five people died here -- and two more in nearby New Hartford.SOT: Perry Bernard, Tornado Eyewitness: "all I saw was the biggest black wall in my life and I couldn't even tell, I didn't think it was a tornado because it was so wide."
